SEALSFIELD, Charles, orig. Karl Anton Postl (1793-1864). American novelist, b. Poppitz, Moravia. Educated for priesthood but fled from monastery; to U.S. (1823) and naturalized; resident in Switzerland (after 1832) but retained his American citizenship. Author of Tokeah (1828), Der Virey und die Aristokraten (1834), Die deutsch-amerikanischen Wahlverwandtschaften (1839), Das Kajütenbuch (1841), Lebensbilder aus der westlichen Hemisphäre (1846), etc.
