RITTENHOUSE, William (1644-1708).
German-American, clergyman and industrialist, b. Mülheim an der Ruhr, Prussia. To America (1688) and settled in Germantown, Pa.; chosen first pastor of the Mennonite group there; elected bishop (1703) of first Mennonite church in America. Organized paper-manufacturing company and built (1690) first paper mill in America. See David Rittenhouse, great grandson. |
